7 Tips for Anxious Flyers

Did you know that 40% of all people experience some form of anxiety when it comes to flying?

Here are a few tips you can try out next time you’re feeling anxious about flying.

Plan Ahead

Reconfirm your flight details, check-in online 24 hrs before departure, and keep an eye on the status of your flight. There are lots of apps that can track your flight details. Also, arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare to reduce rushing and stress. For domestic flights, airlines recommend showing up 90 minutes before departure, and 3 hours for international flights.

Bring Distractions

Create a calming playlist on Spotify or download interesting podcasts to listen to during the flight. Pack entertainment such as books, movies, music, or puzzles to keep your mind occupied during the flight, incase your aircraft doesn’t have in-flight entertainment. You can even download your favourite shows or movies on your phone/iPad to watch on the plane. Make sure to do this before you lose internet connection!

Practice Deep Breathing and Relaxation Techniques

Breathing exercises and mindfulness can help calm your nerves. I learned a helpful breathing technique from an expert - try inhaling deeply for a count of 4 seconds, holding for 7, and exhaling slowly for 8 to reduce anxiety. (Helps you fall asleep too!)

Stay Hydrated and Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, as dehydration can exacerbate anxiety. (Another reason to show up to the airport early - grab a water bottle or fill your reusable one!) While most people would assume having a drink will calm their nerves, alcohol will actually dehydrate you more than it would on land, thus causing anxiety to spike! (Vicious circle!) Try to avoid caffeine as well, which can increase feelings of nervousness.

Inform the Flight Crew

You can low-key inform the flight attendants. They are trained to assist nervous passengers and can provide reassurance for you.  You can even ask them to check in on you during the flight to make sure that you’re okay! Just remember not to sound worried or scared, as that could alarm other passengers.

Find Ways to Distract Yourself

Sometimes, keeping busy can help alleviate anxiety. Bring a magazine or book to read, bring your favorite playlist of music to listen to during the flight, or even download some apps that you can play during the flight.

Stay Positive and Focus on the Destination

Remember the reasons for your trip and focus on the exciting destination rather than the flight itself. Turn anxiety into excitement and focus on the positive aspects of your journey.
